# You appeared in an AI answer. What did you actually measure?

A citation screenshot is a lead. A stable query panel is a record you can compare. Keep the engine, denominator, and missing observations visible.

## The answer

Measure AI citations with a repeatable panel of questions, fixed collection settings, and a saved response for every attempt. Report how often the target URL appeared among completed observations, alongside failed attempts and responses with no citations. Keep that result separate from search impressions, visits, and enquiries. A small panel describes the panel; it does not establish market share or prove that a page edit caused an improvement.

## Choose the question before the score

Start with a decision: should this page be clarified, expanded, or left alone? Select a small fixed set of questions that the page genuinely answers. Record why each belongs in the panel. Keep exploratory prompts in a separate list so an attractive new result cannot quietly replace an inconvenient old one. This is our proposed editorial protocol, not an industry benchmark.

Google documents that AI Overviews and AI Mode can use different models and techniques, and can produce different responses and links. AI Overviews also do not appear for every query. That makes the product surface part of the observation, rather than a label you can omit from a dashboard. [1]

## One row for every attempt

Record | Why it belongs
--- | ---
Exact question and panel version | A wording change creates a different probe.
Engine, product surface, and visible model label | A search result, overview, and chat answer are different observations.
Timestamp, country, language, account state | Document the collection conditions; use unknown where the tool does not expose them.
Completion status and saved response | Distinguish a failed request from a completed answer without a citation.
Target URL, cited URL, and citation type | A brand mention is different from a link to the page.
Collector and source class | Manual UI observation, public research tool, and owned analytics have different limits.

Save enough evidence to audit the row: an exported response, screenshot, or tool receipt with the actual links. Preserve redirects before normalizing URLs. Decide in advance whether another page on the same domain counts as success. For a page-level experiment, report exact-page and other-domain-page appearances separately.

## Keep the denominator intact

Define the main rate as completed observations that cite the target divided by all completed observations. Count a completed answer with no citations in that denominator. Report the number of attempted and failed collections alongside it. If the surface never appeared, preserve that state too; do not relabel it as a technical failure merely because the result is inconvenient.

For illustration only, suppose 20 planned observations yield 18 completed responses and two timeouts. If three completed responses cite the page, report 3 of 18, plus 2 failed attempts out of 20. These numbers are a worked example, not init.news results. A second rate restricted to responses containing citations may be useful, but label its narrower denominator explicitly.

## Separate appearance from useful arrival

As inspected on 9 October 2026, Google's AI-feature documentation says appearances in its AI search features are included in Search Console's Web performance data. That documentation does not make a manual citation panel interchangeable with an owned-property traffic report. [1] Search Console also defines impressions, clicks, and position according to the result element involved. Read those definitions before joining exports. [2]

- Publish the observation window and collection settings beside any rate.
- Compare the same panel before adding newly discovered questions.
- Record content changes, deployment dates, and any engine changes you can verify.
- Keep unknown analytics values empty or explicitly unknown; do not turn missing access into zero.
- Treat a repeated appearance as a reason to investigate relevance, then inspect whether readers complete a useful next step.

## The next useful experiment

Choose one weakly answered question and improve the relevant passage. Re-run the fixed panel on a declared follow-up date, with the unchanged prompts and settings. Compare response wording, cited URLs, and any authorized traffic data. The result can guide the next edit; without a stronger design, it cannot isolate the edit's causal effect from indexing delays, engine changes, or ordinary variation.
